Developing
gold hill BY MARTIN EVENING
the Shot
Gold Hill is a steep cobbled street in Shaftesbury, Dorset, that has proved a popular location for photo graphers, as well as filmmakers. Ridley Scott used it as the location for a Hovis bread commercial, which was once voted as Britain’s favorite TV ad of all time. This featured a young lad pushing a heavy bicycle up the hill making bread deliveries. The photography, voiceover, and soundtrack conjured up the feeling of a gritty, workingclass community set in 1930s industrial England.
