well as a bounce or fill. It created quite a different look from ordinary window light, which you can see in the earlier photo of dancer Victoria Seguin in the tutu at Dancemakers.
When shooting, I always like to move the subject around, so that I can see the effect the light has, as well as the poses I feel are most interesting and flat- tering to the subject. And since I couldn’t do that with the light as it was in a fixed location, it made the most sense to have a choice of different looks when editing the shots.
Focusing Attention
We next moved on to using the rolling boards as back- drops, and for the lighting, we set up one Profoto D2 unit with a Magnum Reflector attached, plus a 20° grid at camera left. My goal was to create a more direct and controlled light. I had Kaitlin standing on the edge of the board and aimed the light so it would spill across her face, also letting the spill bring out some of the shadow detail on her legs. The background is white and it created fill. I was intent on using the one light source and manipulating the backdrop to fill in, while at the same time, having the light fall off so that our eyes go to her face.
