Rock ’n’ Roll!
The final setup of the day involved a costume change and back into hair and makeup for Kaitlin. I was always a big fan of Heart—saw them way back in the ’70s when they first started out—so I brought in Zel Tyrant for her unusual costumes and rented a guitar. We put up a black backdrop, gelled out the lights, and voilà—as Joe McNally put it to me years ago, “Call it theatre lighting.”
I metered the two kicker lights at f/8, which were zoom reflectors attached to the Profoto D2 units, one gelled with a blue gel and the other a rose gel. The key light, camera left, was a Profoto beauty dish with a grid on it, attached to a Profoto D1 unit and metered one stop (ƒ/5.6) below the back lights so that I could get the highlights more pro- nounced and evident when she turned to the side or back. I was delighted with the outcome and I encouraged Kaitlin to rock it out, so to speak. n
