When it comes to backdrops, it would be fair to say that I am something of a snob. In the humble opinion of this reviewer and photographer, there are way too many cheesy backdrops finding their way into people’s images these days. Because of this, I tend to default to white, black, or dove-gray seamless backgrounds because of their clean, classic looks. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, the beautiful, costly, and much-lusted after (by me), hand-painted backdrops produced by Brooklyn-based Oliphant Studio. Used all the time by the likes of Annie Leibovitz, Vanity Fair, etc., they’re absolutely gorgeous, but they don’t come cheap. In fairness, they can be rented, and many photographers go this route.
There’s one bright spot in the world of beautiful, high-quality, yet surprisingly affordable backdrops that even a snob like me can love—Seamless. I reviewed their Eleanor Backdrop, designed by Emily Soto, in the May/June 2016 issue of Photoshop User maga- zine. They’re back with the Celia, an equally beautiful, well-made, hand-printed muslin backdrop designed by award-winning international fashion photographer, Lara Jade.
The Celia is every bit as versatile as the Eleanor Backdrop, which I’ve used extensively for everything from fashion editorial to cor- porate headshot work. The Celia falls decidedly more on the light, airy, and whimsical end of the spectrum than the Eleanor, making it the ideal candidate for fashion, toddlers, families, seniors, or any subject you’d like to portray with a light, upbeat touch. Finished in a painterly watercolor palette of cool cream colors, this 6 oz muslin backdrop is another winner from the folks at Seamless. Backdrops are available in 10x20' ($450), 10x12' ($340), and a new 6x8' option ($250). n
