Step 10: Unlike when working with men where it’s encouraged to leave a few blemishes, we’ll want to fix most blemishes on women’s skin. Changing the blend mode to Lighten when using the Clone Stamp tool helps lighten darker areas, while keeping the details in the skin. This is great for lightening underneath the eyes and darker shades of the wrinkles that we may not want to remove. If unsure as to whether to remove a scar or not, ask the client. Women are typically very upfront about scars or beauty marks that they want removed in an image. The texture needs to be believable, not perfect.
Steps 11–13: When dodging and burning on women, we want to give the face a little more definition. Good areas to dodge to bring out the high- lights are around the lips, the apples of the cheekbones, and any highlights from the existing light on the chin, nose, and forehead. We typically burn along the cheekbones and the jaw. We can further dodge and burn areas such as the hair and eyes by using a 50% gray layer. To create the gray layer, duplicate the Color layer, go to Edit>Fill, select 50% Gray from the Contents drop-down menu, and click OK. Then, change the layer blend mode to Overlay. Using the Dodge and Burn tools (O) set to a very low Expo- sure in the Options Bar, we can further add highlights and shadows to the hair and eyes providing more texture and depth. We also have the option to only dodge or burn the Highlights, Midtones, and Shadows in the Range drop-down menu in the Options Bar. Remember that less is more. If the effect is too much, the Opacity of that layer can always be decreased.
