Digital Restoration from Start to Finish: How to Repair Old and Damaged Photographs
By Ctein
Review by Peter Bauer
As you can tell from the page count, there’s a lot of information here. But wait! There’s more! The author intends that material that had to be cut from the previous version to make room for new material will be available online. (It’s not as of this review.) My favorite part of the book is the section immediately prior to Chapter 1, “Quick Diagnostic Guide to Restoration.” The author shows 36 examples of problems you may be hired to restore and the resulting restoration—and under each, he lists the pages you can jump to for instructions on how to address each particular problem. Even if you don’t know what to call the problem (which would make it difficult to locate the restoration procedure in the Index or Table of Contents), you can compare your image to the examples and see right where to go in the book. n
